How to Use HeyGen to Make AI Avatar Videos (Beginner Guide)

A step-by-step walkthrough of making your first AI avatar video in HeyGen — from writing the script to exporting a finished, on-brand video, with no filming required.

If you've never made a video with an AI avatar before, the idea can feel more complicated than it is. In practice, the whole process is closer to writing an email than editing a film.

This is a step-by-step walkthrough of making your first HeyGen video — a talking-head clip you could use for a product explainer, a social update, or a short client message — from a blank account to a finished export.

Step 1: Create an Account

Go to heygen.com and sign up. There's a free or trial tier that lets you test the output before paying for anything — use it. Generate at least one full video before deciding whether to upgrade.

Step 2: Decide What the Video Is For

Before opening the editor, know your answer to two questions:

  • Who is this for? A client, a social audience, an internal team?
  • How long should it be? Avatar videos work best short — under two minutes for social or client updates, longer only for training content where people expect to sit through it.

This decides your script length and template choice before you touch the tool, which saves you from over-editing later.

Step 3: Write Your Script First, Outside HeyGen

Write the script in a plain document first — not directly in the tool. Read it out loud once. If it sounds awkward when spoken, it will sound awkward coming from the avatar too. AI avatars deliver the script closely to how it's written, so a script that reads naturally out loud is the single biggest factor in how natural the final video feels.

Keep sentences short. Avoid long, comma-heavy sentences — they're harder for any voice, human or AI, to deliver naturally.

Step 4: Choose Your Avatar

In the HeyGen editor, click to start a new video and choose an avatar:

Stock avatar: Browse the built-in library. Pick one that fits the tone of the video — professional, casual, or industry-specific options are usually available.

Custom avatar (your own): If you want the video to look like you, follow HeyGen's guided process to record a short training clip of yourself under good lighting, following their on-screen instructions exactly (framing, expression, and pauses matter for output quality). This is a one-time setup — once your avatar exists, you can generate new videos of "you" without filming again.

For your first video, start with a stock avatar. Save the custom avatar setup for once you're comfortable with the rest of the workflow.

Step 5: Add Your Script and Choose a Voice

Paste your script into the text field for your avatar's dialogue. Choose a voice — HeyGen offers a range of AI voices in multiple languages and accents. Preview the voice on a short section of your script before generating the full video; tone and pacing vary more between voices than you'd expect.

Step 6: Pick a Background and Layout

Choose a background: a solid colour, a branded image, or a template scene. Keep it simple for your first video — a clean background keeps attention on the message, not the visuals.

If you're adding on-screen text (a headline, your business name, a call to action), add it now using the template's text layer options.

Step 7: Generate and Review

Click generate. Processing time depends on video length — a one-minute video typically takes a few minutes to render. Watch the full result once it's ready, with sound on, before doing anything else.

Check for:

  • Any words the voice mispronounced (fix by rephrasing the script, not just the spelling)
  • Timing that feels rushed or too slow (adjust script length or pacing)
  • Whether the avatar's expression fits the tone of the message

Step 8: Export and Use

Export in the resolution and format you need — most social platforms and email tools accept standard MP4 exports. Download the file and use it directly, or bring it into a basic video editor if you want to add your own intro, outro, or captions beyond what HeyGen generated.

Common First-Video Mistakes

Writing the script like an essay, not speech. Long, formal sentences sound stiff coming from an avatar. Write the way you'd actually talk to a client.

Skipping the voice preview. Generating a full two-minute video before checking how the voice sounds wastes render time. Preview short sections first.

Over-decorating the first attempt. Elaborate templates and multiple scene changes make it harder to spot what's actually working. Start simple, then add polish once you know the basics land well.

Not watching the full output before sharing. Always review the entire video, not just the first ten seconds, before sending it to a client or posting it publicly.

What a Realistic First Session Looks Like

Budget 30-45 minutes for your first video, most of it spent on the script. The actual generation and export steps take a few minutes. If your second and third videos take half the time, that's normal — the script-writing habit is what speeds up, not the tool itself.
